You’ve been playing a while.You’ve got some solid shots.You’re wondering... “Am I still a beginner? Am I 3.0? 3.5? What's my pickleball rating?”

It’s the question every player asks — and we’re here to break it down without the jargon or gatekeeping.

Here’s a simple guide to pickleball ratings, what they mean, how to figure out yours, and how to level up right here at Bloomington Pickleball Warehouse (BPW).

🔢 What Are Pickleball Ratings?

Pickleball uses a number-based rating system to group players by skill level.

The most common system is the DUPR rating (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating). There’s also self-assessment, especially when you're just starting out.

The rating scale:

  • 2.0 – 2.5 = Beginner

  • 3.0 = Recreational, knows the basics

  • 3.5 = Intermediate, consistent play, some strategy

  • 4.0 = Advanced rec, controls pace, plays with intent

  • 4.5+ = High-level competitive

  • 5.0+ = Tournament players, semi-pros and pros

🤔 So... What Level Am I?

If you’re asking the question, you’re probably somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 — and that’s awesome. That’s where most players start and where the most growth happens.

Here’s a quick gut check:

You might be 2.5 if:

✅ You’re learning rules and how to keep score

✅ You’re just starting to serve consistently

✅ You’re working on keeping the ball in play

You might be 3.0 if:

✅ You can serve and return regularly

✅ You know what a dink is (even if it's ugly)

✅ You’ve played a few games and felt competitive

You might be 3.5 if:

✅ You’re starting to play with strategy

✅ You can reset and drop into the kitchen

✅ You know when to attack and when to defend

At BPW, most of our Open Play groups are organized by these rating levels — so you’ll always have a good match no matter where you are.

📲 What Is DUPR, and Should I Care?

Yes — if you want to improve.

DUPR is a universal rating system that uses actual match results (not vibes) to assign you a real score.
