So youâve been grinding in Open Play. Your dinks are tight. Your drives are dialed. Youâre starting to feel like youâre actually⊠good.
Now itâs time to prove it. đȘ
Whether youâre entering a friendly league night or your first real bracketed competition, playing your first pickleball tournament is a big stepâand Bloomington Pickleball Warehouse (BPW) is the perfect place to do it.
Hereâs everything you need to know to walk in confident, ready, and fired up for your tournament debut.đ
1ïžâŁ Know the Format đđŻ
Not all tournaments run the same. Before you show up, make sure you know the format:
â Round robin or bracket?
â Single or double elimination?
â How many games do you play?
â To 11 or to 15? Win by 1 or 2?
â Is it skill-based (e.g. 3.0-3.5) or open level?
Knowing the format changes how you warm up, manage energy, and set your strategy. At BPW, we run a variety of formatsâso read the event description and ask questions early if anythingâs unclear.
2ïžâŁ Find the Right Partner đ€đ„
If itâs doubles (which most tournaments are), choose a partner who complements your style.
â Are you aggressive at the net? Find a partner with strong resets and drops.
â Are you a lefty? Pairing with a righty can give you strategic court coverage.
â Do your personalities match? You donât want sideline tension mid-rally. đ
And once you pick your partner? Train together. It makes a difference.
3ïžâŁ Lock in Your Pre-Tourney Practice Plan đ§
Practice isnât just about repsâitâs about replicating tournament pressure.
đ„ Drill with purpose:Â Focus on the shots youâll need mostâthird shot drops, cross-court dinks, fast hands at the net.
đ„ Play practice matches:Â Simulate game conditions. Keep score. Feel the nerves.
đ„ Work on communication:Â Who takes middle balls? Who calls lobs? Get synced.
At BPW, you can rent a private court to get focused, game-speed reps. ($5/person/hourâworth every penny.)
4ïžâŁ Prep Your Gear Like a Pro đđ
Nothing worse than being âthat guyâ scrambling for a paddle two minutes before your first match. Here's a basic checklist:
â Primary paddle (and maybe a backup)
â Plenty of water
â Small towel or wristbands
â Extra shirt or grip tape
â Court shoes with solid lateral support
â Energy snacks (bananas, protein bars, etc.)
And show up earlyâat least 20â30 minutes before your first match to warm up and check in.
5ïžâŁ Manage Your Mindset đ§ââïžđ„
First tournament? You're gonna be a little nervous. Thatâs normal. The key is knowing how to channel it:
â Focus on consistency, not flashy shots
â Play one point at a timeâdonât get hung up on the score
â Control what you can control: footwork, effort, and attitude
â Expect mistakesâeveryone makes them, even 5.0s
And remember: tournaments arenât just about resultsâtheyâre about leveling up your game under pressure.
6ïžâŁ Have Fun, Win or Lose đ
At the end of the day, your first pickleball tournament should be fun. Youâll meet players youâve never faced, push yourself in new ways, and leave a better competitor than when you walked in.
đ Grab some pizza with your partner afterward.
đž Take a team photo in front of the BPW banner.
đ„ Use this tournament as your baselineâand build from there.
Win or learn. There is no lose.
